The Phillippe-Altamour Residence was designed for a walk street in Manhattan Beach. The lines of the resulting structure form a strong collection of vertical elements which are color accented to resemble a Mondrian piece. The Modern framework helps manage the tight site limitations which are reinterpreted into intersecting rectangular volumes in both a horizontal and vertical orientation. These forms along with L-shapes formations fuse the minimalist lines into a distinctive composition, while avoiding the sterile feeling often associated with hard edged buildings. The inclusion of large window walls also act to further breakup the forms visually into suspended components that slide past one another.
The incorporation of the roll-up garage door at the walk street level allows the family to greet their guests and entertain on multiple levels at once. Between the walk street level and the third floor is a floating “loft style” master bedroom suspended between 2 story volumes.
